The 24th Street School garden is growing more than plants! The after-school yoga program has cultivated a love of this ancient practice in a talented group of second and third grade girls.
Our Yoga Club is designed to embrace the free spirit and imagination of children. Breathing exercises calm and relax students. Interactive games channel students’ creative movements. Simple vinyasas get the blood pumping while aligning breath with movement. Finally, partner activities encourage friendship and promote trust.
Entering the garden as curious new students, the girls have become little yoginis. They absolutely love being called yoginis! As their first lesson, they learned the yogic concept of Ahimsa, or non-harm. The girls further defined Ahimsa as love, respect, and compassion for all. With Ahimsa as the overarching rule of the yoga program, each class is full of strength, growth, laughter, and love.
Yoga, like the garden, provides each student with a safe space to grow. Negative thoughts have been transformed into positive ones, new friendships have formed, and strengths have been realized. Yoga in the garden is a special time for all involved.
