We are currently accepting submissions for the 2015-2016 school year to bring the Seed to Table program to your school! If your school is in Los Angeles, qualifies for Title I funding, and has a preexisting garden, then you meet the criteria to submit an application. Please use the "Apply Here" link below to begin the application process.
The Garden School Foundation's Seed to Table Program is a year-round program of garden-based education for k-5th grades that is designed to fully integrate gardens into the school community and help schools maximize a garden's transformative potential. In the program, students visit the garden every other week during the school day for either a Cooking and Nutrition class or a Science-themed garden class. Our lesson plans follow the CA State and Common Core standards, and correlate to what is being taught in the classroom, while bringing classroom concepts to life through hands-on experiences. All classes are facilitated by a trained GSF Garden Coordinator and Garden Intern, who also maintain the garden as a living laboratory to support our curriculum; help coordinate volunteer efforts amongst your pre-existing garden community; conduct outreach to your school community to develop participation and funding support; and facilitate extended learning opportunities, including After School clubs and Community Weekend Workdays. GSF also works with your teachers to develop their own abilities and confidence using the garden as an instructional tool.
To qualify, your school must:
- Qualify for Title I funding
- Be prepared to provide or raise a percentage of the direct yearly program costs, the amount determined depending on Title I qualification
- Have a garden at your school, complete with an outdoor classroom, or plans to create one
- Be able to provide an indoor classroom for garden use, a sink for washing dishes, access to a copier and permit the use of your campus for weekend events
Once we have received and reviewed your application we will contact you about further steps. If you have any questions please contact Executive Director, Cassie Martinez at email@example.com
While we have plans to work with schools beyond Los Angeles in the future, we are currently not accepting applications for those schools outside LA County. However, please feel free to contact us with any questions you have about working with the Garden School Foundation in the future and we will do our best to help out however we can, including providing curricular materials and staff trainings.
